History behind the coming of a "House Name"

The origin of house name has an interesting story behind it. We cannot be sure when or how humankind stared following the trend of naming their living spaces.

These house names stood as unique and bold in their style, commanding a lot of power on their own. There was also a practice among the commoners to name their houses. House names like Alps, Auroville, and Apple tree cottage never failed to inspire many people.

20th century saw the house names, which were more common and suitable to the kinds of houses, built in these times. People did not consider it very sensible to choose a fancy house name for a modest house. Instead, they went for common names. They began to use the names of the residents to derive a house name. For example, the house inhabited by Samantha and Richard would become Samchard.

House names were inspired by the financial factors after the Second World War. The house name was used to indicate the social standing of the people in those times.

Importance of the House Name

In some of the countries, we can see the magnitude of importance of the house name. In parts of rural Poland and Catalonia, people are often addressed by their house name instead of the surname. The house name serves to denote the social standing of the person. This is how other people know that person. In Britain, formerly house names were given for the purpose of posts to reach the house conveniently. However, since the introduction of house numbers, this function has declined in its importance.
